Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is encouraging Muslim communities to ensure they celebrate safely during Ramadan, a month long celebration that starts on Friday May 26.

"You should not leave their cooking unattended and take extra care when cooking with oil, as it easily sets alight. Also ensure you have working smoke alarms on every floor of your home – test them weekly to make sure they work."

Rehana Iqbal, Community Risk Reduction Officer

Community Risk Reduction Officer, Rehana Iqbal said: "During Ramadan it is common to have one meal, known as the suhoor, just before sunrise and another, known as the iftar, directly after sunset. This means that a lot of cooking takes place before and after sunrise, so kitchen safety is really important – there have already been 83 accidental cooking fires this year.

"In particular people should not leave their cooking unattended and take extra care when cooking with oil, as it easily sets alight. Also ensure you have working smoke alarms on every floor of your home – test them weekly to make sure they work.

"Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Community Advice Team offer all residents in Staffordshire free home fire safety advice and where suitable a Safe and Well visit. These involve a member of staff visiting your home and helping to identify any potential fire risks, as well as addressing other areas of vulnerability.

"This is a really important time for reflection, patience and self-restraint, and we wish our Muslim communities Ramadan Mubarak."
