Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s mascot Wele and naughty elf Buddy have been helping share fire safety messages this Christmas.

"We know that as this is a very busy time of year fire safety is not at the forefront of everyone’s minds. However, we really want to make sure residents celebrate safety this Christmas and we’d really prefer it if we didn’t get an invite to your home over the holidays!"

Director of Prevent and Protect Glynn Luznyj

In the run up to Christmas the Service has shared daily social media posts of their naughty elf Buddy as he has caused havoc, taking electrical and fire safety risks which have made his home very unsafe. The posts, which were shared on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, have reached over 480,000 people.

Thankfully, the Service’s mascot Wele was on hand to help Buddy make better choices.

The Service has used the social media campaign to highlight the common dangers that firefighters see in homes over Christmas. From overloading plug sockets to leaving candles lit Buddy and Wele have highlighted numerous festive hazards that can be found around the home.

To prevent a visit from our crews this year, here are some important tips:

  • DO test your smoke alarms weekly
  • DO get your chimney swept  before using it
  • DON’T  take the batteries out of your smoke alarm
  • DON’T leave the Christmas lights on when going out or/to bed
  • DON’T leave presents or empty boxes in the way of exits
  • DON’T overload plug sockets
  • DON’T use unsafe equipment that doesn’t have the British Safety Kitemark  or CE Safety Standard mark
  • DON’T  get distracted while cooking
  • DON’T leave flammable items too close to heat sources

“We do see some common incidents at this time of year and we wanted to try to get our safety messages across in a fun and festive way using Buddy the elf to highlight various fire and safety risks.

“We want everyone in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent to enjoy their Christmas but we also want them to stay as safe as possible. Thank you to everyone who has gotten involved in the campaign by liking and sharing the posts.”
