A smoke alarm saved the lives of four members of one Lichfield family during an arson attack on their home.
Firefighters were called to a property in Lower Sandford Street at 2.14am today after police received a telephone call claiming someone had tried to set fire to the house.
"This shows the value of having a smoke alarm. In this incident the smoke alarm has saved four lives."
Mark Bellewksi, Watch Manager at Lichfield
Watch Manager at Lichfield, Mark Bellewski, said: "Petrol has been poured over the front door of the property and set alight.
"This has spread underneath the door, triggering the smoke alarm downstairs, which then activated the one upstairs.
"This woke the mother, father and their two daughters who ran downstairs and saw the smoke. They immediately called the emergency services. This was an arson attack."
The four occupants were treated for smoke inhalation at the scene by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment.
Police have confirmed a man has been arrested in connection with the incident.
