Incident on Waterloo Street

An emergency call was received at 4am this morning, made by a member of the public who had spotted smoke issuing from a property on Waterloo Street in Burton.

Two crews from Burton were sent to the incident which involved a fire on the ground floor of a middle terraced property that had been converted into a haberdashery. Upon arrival firefighters found an assortment of materials and fabrics which were alight. After forcing their way inside of the property, crews wearing breathing apparatus used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire and then ventilated the property.

Station Manger Phil Smith commented: "The fire is believed to have been caused deliberately and has been left with Staffordshire Police. However once scene of crime officers have concluded their investigation later this morning, firefighters will be returning to the scene to carry out an inspection."

The incident, which closed at 5.35am, caused minor fire and smoke damage to the first floor of the property.
