Former Chairman of Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Authority, Cllr Derek Davis has been included in the New Year's Honours Lists for 2010.
Labour Councillor, Derek Davis was nominated for an OBE in recognition for his services to the people of Hednesford, Cannock as a councillor for more than 37 years and for his work as Chairman of the Fire and Rescue Authority over an eighteen year period.
Chief Fire Officer, Peter Dartford said: "Derek was an absolute credit to the Service during his time as Chairman. He was instrumental in driving the Service forward to its position now as one of the leading fire and rescue services in the country. During his time as Chairman we managed to reduce accidental fire deaths by over 70%. "We are delighted he has been recognised for his commitment and dedication to our service."
Cllr Derek Davis OBE said: "It is obviously a great honour to receive this award. I am particularly proud of my work as Chairman of the Fire and Rescue Authority. We really had members from all parties working together to help make Staffordshire's fire service one of the best in the country. In particular we brought operational firefighters much closer to their local communities. We now have a fire and rescue service more clearly focused on preventing fires and other incidents rather than just reacting to them. This is something we have been widely recognised for and about which I have spoken nationally."
"I have greatly enjoyed all my work as a councillor and would like to thank those I have worked with while I have performed my duties."
