Fire at Factory Being Demolished

Work to ready the Twyfords factory in Etruria for demolition was interrupted when a fire broke out on the first floor there.

Two appliances from Hanley and one from Newcastle attended the incident in Etruscan Street at 1.28pm today.

"A box of Christmas decorations stored right next to where they were working was accidentally set alight by sparks."

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the blaze which started after welding equipment inadvertently set a box of Christmas decorations alight.

Assistant Area Commander for Stoke, Ruth Watchorn-Rice said: "On arrival it looked very dramatic with thick smoke bellowing from the building.

"Workmen were in the disused building, cutting pipes and using welding equipment, preparing it to be demolished.
