Staffordshire Fire & Rescue Service - Preventing, Protecting, Responding

Incident at Brinsford Prison

Firefighters have this afternoon rescued a man who had fallen from the roof space in a boiler room within a residential block at Brinsford Prison in Featherstone.

Crews from Cannock and Brewood, and also the rescue tender from Stafford, attended the incident which involved a prison officer who had fallen approximately five metres off a ladder as he was making his way down from the loft space.

South Staffordshire Assistant Area Commander Paul Richins commented, "At the time of the incident we believe the prison officer was showing some contractors to the loft in the boiler room and on his way back down unfortunately he fell and ended up trapped between some piping.

"The man was conscious throughout the rescue, however due to his injuries he was unable to release himself and so crews used cutting equipment to cut away the pipes which were trapping him. Assisting paramedics, firefighters then used a pulley system to release the casualty, onto a spine board. He was then taken to Selly Oak hospital via air ambulance."

The incident closed at 2.35pm.
