Businesses are urged to be on their guard following bogus calls being made by people offering fire safety risk assessment checks on their premises. Last week a publican in Leek received a call from a man who tried to pressure him into booking a fire assessment - the caller got quite rude and aggressive when the publican got suspicious.
The call was made from a withheld number and the publican asked to take a contact number to call him back. The number he was given was a Leek phone number, when the publican returned the call he got through to a local resident, who reported this was the second phone call of that nature that she’d received.
"We do not cold call, we will never call from a withheld number and we will not get rude or aggressive."
David Steele, Risk Reduction Officer
Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is now warning people who are contacted by this man to contact the trading standards immediately.
Risk Reduction Officer, David Steele, said: "We do not know who this man is, where he is calling from or what his purpose is but it is clear he is not what he claims to be.
"Here at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service we can offer advice to businesses on how they should carry out a fire risk assessment of their property. We do not cold call, we will never call from a withheld number and we will not get rude or aggressive.
"If this gentleman was a genuine service professional he would not provide false contact details."
David added, for private dwellings, Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service does provide free Home Fire Risk Checks. These can be booked by calling 0800 0241 999. Appointments are made at the callers' convenience.
