Our partner organisations and agencies offer a wide variety of support, advice and information. The below links might help some older people deal with the more difficult conditions during the Winter period.

If you know of an older person that may benefit from some of the services outlined below, please signpost them appropriately and make them aware of services available to them.

Cold Homes

For independent energy advice for those in Stoke-on-Trent, Stafford, Lichfield and Newcastle- under-Lyme, visit the Beat the Cold website

For those in South Staffordshire, Marches Energy Agency may be able to provide support.

For information about the Warm Home Discount scheme visit their website

The Winter Fuel Payment is available to people born before January 5, 1953 and claiming the state pension or another social security benefit. Visit the government website for more information.

Flu Prevention

The NHS have provided information about flu vaccination and who is entitled to it for free.

Social Isolation

Age UK offer a befriending service and a Care Navigation Service as well as tea and coffee clubs and social and leisure networks and many other services.

The NHS have provided a comprehensive list of activities and actions that older people may wish to take in order to avoid loneliness and stay socially connected.

The Silver Line is a free confidential helpline providing information, friendship and advice to older people, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone: 0800 470 8090.


Information is available about the Falls Prevention Service from the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Partnership Trust.

Staffordshire County Council have some good information on equipment and technology to assist with independent living.

Citizens Advice are a charity who offer free independent advice on a broad range of issues.

The local Council offers services that can help older people live independently in their home:

  • Staffordshire County Council provides a range of support services to help older people to continue living independently in their own home.  These include aids, adaptations and equipment, personal alarms, a meals delivery service and a range of home alarms.
  • Stoke on Trent City Council’s Adult Social Care Department helps people who need extra support to live as independently as possible. These include aids, adaptations and equipment, personal alarms, a meals delivery service and a range of home alarms.
