Crews tackle fire at Walleys Quarry

Last night (Sunday 4 August), a number of crews attended a fire a Walleys Quarry in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Crews have worked tirelessly throughout the night to bring the fire under control and to minimise the impact on the local community.

We have now scaled back our fire presence. Two fire engines remain at the scene as we start damping down and dealing with hotpots.

The main seats of the fire have been contained.

Station Manager Duncan Cole said: “Crews are continuing to work alongside site staff who are using diggers to lift sections of the waste, allowing firefighters to damp down remaining hot spots.

“We expect to be here for a few days yet to ensure all hot spots are fully extinguished so that the fire does not reignite.”

At the height of the incident there were six fire engines, a water carrier and a high volume pump being used to tackle the fire.

Our crews will continue attending over the next few days to ensure the fire is fully extinguished.

Fire investigators will be at the site today to look into the cause of the fire.

We want to remind local residents to take precautions, to keep windows closed and avoid the area where possible.
