Firefighters and staff set to embark on sponsored walk for charity
Lots of our firefighters and staff are set to embark on a sponsored walk spanning more than 100 miles to raise money for The Fire Fighters Charity.
In the wake of our 50th anniversary celebrations that started in April, we pledged to raise £50,000 for the cause over the next 12-months.
Part of these efforts will see our firefighters and staff walking from the three stations at the ends of our county to our headquarters in Stone, all on their days off.
The walk will take place over three days from Friday (19 July), finishing with drinks and refreshments at HQ on Sunday (21 July).
The walks, which will predominantly take place on the canal networks across Staffordshire, will involve three separate routes:
- Longnor Community Fire Station to HQ
- Tamworth Mercia Community Fire Station to HQ
- Kinver Community Fire Station to HQ
All three combined routes amount to around 118 miles in total, requiring those taking part to tag in others in a relay-style route once they’ve done what they can.
All of the money raised will be donated to The Fire Fighters Charity, an organisation that offers bespoke support to serving and retired members of the UK’s fire services.
The charity work tirelessly to support the fire family by helping members to better their physical and mental health, alongside social wellbeing support and nursing.
They first started helping firefighters and their families more than 80 years ago, forming during World War Two to help bereaved families of those who had died fighting fires in the Blitz.
Business Support Manager Caroline Firkins said: “We’ve brought together staff from across the county to take part in this walk and after months of planning everyone is really looking forward to it.
“We’ll be carrying the fundraising QR code with us so if anyone wants to contribute or even give us a wave or cheer of encouragement along the way we’ll be really grateful.
“The Fire Fighters Charity is a fantastic cause, we all know or have worked with someone the charity has supported, so it’s really important for us to give something back.”
