House fire in Abbey Hulton caused by brazier fire

We have extinguished a house fire in Stoke-on-Trent that was started accidentally by an overloaded brazier.

Six crews were responding to the incident at its height yesterday (Wednesday 19 March) after getting a call of a fire in the roof space of a home on Greasley Road in Abbey Hulton.

We used main jets, hose reel jets and breathing apparatus to bring the fire under control and to stop it from spreading.

Those inside the house at the time were told about the fire burning by someone in the street and got out safely by themselves.

No one was injured and the fire was safely extinguished. One property was left with extensive damage to its roof.

We have carried out a fire investigation this morning (Thursday 20 March) and have found the fire was started accidentally after a brazier fire spread in the back garden of the home.

Fire Investigator Liam Hickey said, “Crews worked as quickly as possible to contain the fire yesterday and to minimise the damage caused to the property and neighbouring buildings.

“As we enter into spring, we know more people will be starting to use braziers and fire pits outside as the warmer weather comes in. Understanding the risks involved with using these devices is crucial in making sure incidents like this don’t happen and you can keep people safe.”

If you’re using a fire pit, make sure it’s positioned far away from conifers, fence panels and flammable objects. Don’t leave them unattended at any time and make sure they are properly extinguished and no hotspots are left to smoulder.

It’s also best practice to make sure hot ashes aren’t put straight into waste bags or wheelie bins where they can set alight again.
