Man rescued following accidental kitchen fire

We have rescued a man from a kitchen fire which started accidentally in Uttoxeter.

We were called at 2.45am on Friday (24 January) to a flat on Hamilton Avenue following reports of a smoke alarm going off and smoke in the area.

Two fire crews attended the scene and used a ladder to gain access to the property.

A man, in his 30s, was helped to exit the flat by fire crews and checked over by paramedics at the scene.

No injuries were reported.

The fire was later deemed to be accidental as a result of burning food.

Station Manager Matthew Melland, who attended the scene, said: "More than 50 percent of the fires we attend are caused by cooking.

"Distraction is the main cause of these fires, with pans and grills left to set alight after being left unsupervised.

"It’s really important that when preparing for meal times that we pay close attention to the food we are cooking and look when we cook."
