Calling out for Future Firefighters

Female firefighter

The application window to recruit our firefighters of the future has now opened.

Our “Future Firefighter” recruitment campaign is encouraging people who may have never considered a career with us before to find out more, as we want to attract people from a range of backgrounds and diverse communities.

We’ll be recruiting to fill vacancies created by people retiring from the service.

Our new recruits will be specially-trained in a number of areas including responding to emergency incidents such as fires, water rescues and road traffic collisions, as well as being trained in fire prevention and fire safety. They will be a pivotal and important part of our local communities and will help to deliver fire safety education, work with partners and support business engagement across the county.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Michelle Hickmott said: “We’re looking for firefighters of the future and our recruitment campaign is focused on changing people’s perception of what being a firefighter is like and what the role involves, to encourage more people to consider the fire service as a career choice.

“The role is much more than just fighting fires, the reality is that a large proportion of a firefighters time is focused on prevention, training, education, and engaging with the community.

“If you are caring, determined and passionate about doing the best for your community then we’d encourage you to apply. In return we can offer a rewarding role, a funded apprenticeship qualification, opportunities for career progression or to specialise in certain areas, alongside benefits such as generous annual leave and an excellent pension.”

Firefighter Vicky Poole has been in the role for 23 years, she said: “I love the role, it’s varied, the teamwork is great and I enjoy the community engagement aspect.

“For anyone unsure on whether to apply I’d say go for it, it’s a great career and you won’t look back.”

To apply visit our Firefighter recruitment page. Applications will close at midday on 30 September.

The stages of the recruitment process can be found on our website, those who are successful will find out in the winter and will start training in March next year.
